Euglenoids Description

This small phylum consists of mostly freshwater, unicellular aquatic algae. Some euglenoids contain chloroplast with photosynthetic pigments, and others are heterotrophic, meaning they can ingest or absorb their food. The most characteristic genus is Euglena, common in ponds and pools, especially when the water has been polluted by runoff from fields or fertilized lawns.
