Dinoflagellates Description

These typically unicellular flagellates have armored cell walls made of thick plates that fit tightly together to form a continuous covering for the cell. Half the dinoflagellates are colorless predators that consume their food. The other, pigmented half are usually a golden brown in color. Out of the several thousand species of dinoflagellates, only a couple hundred are found in freshwater habitats.
